Empowering Indigenous communities through land-based connection

Mikanah Gatherings are a series of annual events rooted in the belief that urban green spaces can be sites of ceremony, healing, and belonging. We bring together knowledge keepers, youth, families, and community members to walk, learn, and gather on the land together.

Beginning in 2026, gatherings will be held in Winnipeg, Brandon, and Selkirk — honouring each of the four sacred seasons.

Our gatherings are grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and are part of a broader research initiative examining how urban trails and green spaces support the health and self-determination of Indigenous peoples.

A research-driven community initiative

Mikanah Gatherings is a community-engaged research project embedded within the Urban Trails Research Program at the University of Manitoba. Our goal is to empower Indigenous communities through culturally grounded, urban land-based activities that foster health, belonging, and self-determination.

Each gathering is co-designed with community members, knowledge keepers, and research partners to ensure they are culturally safe, meaningful, and rooted in place. We are committed to Indigenous research principles and community-driven approaches throughout the project.
